Deaneries

What are Deaneries & Foundation Schools?

Deaneries are bodies responsible for managing postgraduate medical (and dental) education. They are localised by region, and usually have links with several hospitals (both teaching and district general). The Oxford deanery, for example, will therefore be responsible for allocating jobs not only in the Oxford region, but also in some of the surrounding locations such as Reading and High Wycombe. Bear in mind that these geographical links change quite frequently, an important factor to consider when selecting which deanery is right for you.

Deaneries provide not only jobs for trainees, but also the trainers, educational supervisors and educational leaders, and will help you develop your portfolio of educational development.

The term 'Foundation School' is rather broader, and encompasses medical schools, the local deanery, trusts (acute, mental health and primary care), as well as other bodies and organisations, such as local hospices). These are collectively grouped to enhance the range of training opportunities that a region can offer foundation doctors. The Foundation Schools are tied and managed closely with the local Deanery.
