Assessment - MSF

Multi-Source Feedback

There are 2 tools in use to assess the trainee based upon 'overall' feedback of their performance. These are the Mini-Peer Assessment Tool (mini-PAT) and the Team Assessment Behaviour (TAB). These involve the collection of opinions of a trainee from a range of co-workers for a complete or '3600' assessment. The use of these tools differs between Foundation Schools; each has a choice of using either mini-PAT or TAB or a combination of both.

The assessors have to complete a standardised questionnaire. Once all the feedback has been collated, the trainee and educational supervisor discuss the feedback, and agree upon the overall strengths and key areas for development for the individual trainee.

Mini-Peer Assessment Tool (mini-PAT)

The trainee will nominate 8 assessors to complete the questionnaire. The trainee will also complete a self-assessment using the same questionnaire. (Assessment forms are sent directly to the assessors from the central office to ensure that the individual assessors' views remain unknown to the trainee.)

Feedback is collated electronically at the assessment centre and is presented on a chart showing the self-ratings, the mean nominated assessor ratings and the national mean ratings. Comments are anonymised, but produced verbatim.

Team Assessment of Behaviour (TAB)

The trainee selects 10 co-workers to assess them and distributes the TAB forms with envelopes addressed to the Foundation Training Programme Director (FTPD). Each assessor is asked to complete and return the form to the FTPD. Once of the forms have been collated, trainees then receive feedback from their educational supervisor. Written comments will be quoted verbatim, and a summary form showing the marks and comments will be given to the trainee. This can then be included in the training portfolio.
