Case-based Discussion

This tool involves the presentation and discussion of selected cases with more senior and experienced colleagues. The assessor can then provide systematic assessment and structured feedback of the trainees performance. Discussions stem from the entries made in the patient's clinical notes by the trainee.

This evaluation tool is designed to assess clinical decision-making and the application or use of medical knowledge in the care of the trainee’s own patients. Discussions can also include consideration of the ethical and legal framework of medical practice, and should allows trainees to discuss the reasoning behind their management plan.

No. per year:
6-8 (2 cases recently seen by the trainee and in whose notes they have made an entry, assessor will select 1 of these to use)

Who can assess?
Experienced SpRs, staff grades or consultants in a secondary care setting. The trainer and other GPs in a primary care setting. Although the trainee will choose the assessor, the direct supervising consultant should be one of the observers for each clinical placement.

How long does it take?
About 20 minutes each (15 mins for the assessment / 5 mins for feedback)
